Limitations of IDS

Intrusion Prevention System (IPS)

  • IPS - is a security tool that not only detects threats but also actively prevents them from causing harm. It sits inline with network traffic, inspecting and blocking malicious packets before they reach their target.

Types of IPS

  • Network-based IPS (NIPS) – Monitors and controls network traffic in real time, blocking threats at the network level.

  • Host-based IPS (HIPS) – Protects individual systems by preventing unauthorized changes, malware execution, or exploit attempts.

How IPS Works

  • Uses signature-based, anomaly-based, or heuristic detection to identify threats.

  • Blocks or mitigates malicious activities automatically.

  • Provides real-time protection against cyber threats.

Limitations of IPS

  • If not properly configured, it can block legitimate traffic (false positives).
  • Requires continuous updates to recognize new threats.
  • Can introduce network latency.

Why Are IDS and IPS Important?

  • Threat Detection & Prevention – Identifies and mitigates attacks before they cause damage.

  • Regulatory Compliance – Helps organizations meet security standards (e.g., PCI DSS, HIPAA).

  • Forensic Analysis – Provides logs and insights for investigating security incidents.

Many organizations deploy both IDS and IPS as part of a layered security approach, ensuring robust network protection.
